A Templeton Finn Coaching Case Study:

CAREER OR DAUGHTER?

Alison couldn't see how to have a successful business without it damaging her relationship with her daughter

The business was taking up too much time

Alison was concerned that if she continued with her successful business, she would have less time to spend with her young daughter. In her mind, she had this as an either/ or choice and couldn't seem to make any progress on it.

Learning to let go was the key...

It can be hard for entrepreneurial types to let go...

When Alison explored her thoughts and feelings in more detail, she realised that she could still make a success of her business without spending the hours she'd devoted to it before the birth of her daughter. It just slowed the growth of the business down a bit, and involved her learning more about how to delegate.

As an entrepreneurial character, it was hard for her to let go, and give others the opportunity to take more responsibility. But she knew that doing this would be good for the business in the long run as well as being good for her daughter.

Alison realised that her happiness mattered too!

Also, Alison realised that she needed to do at least some work on the business to feel truly happy, and that her happiness was vital to her daughter. She realised that some of her concerns were based on feelings of guilt which didn't make sense when she thought through what was really best for her daughter.

By working out what was most important to her, and letting go of her unwarranted guilt, Alison worked out a solution that kept her and her daughter happy.
