A Templeton Finn Coaching Case Study:

SHOULD I STAY OR SHOULD I GO?

Sometimes it's really hard to make a decision!

A job offer forced Robin to make a tough decision

At the new firm, Robin would be a small fish in a big sea.

Robin had been at his present firm for about three years, and was not unhappy. However, when he was approached by a head hunter about another job, he decided to look into it. This culminated in a job offer from another firm.

The other firm were offering more money and a more structured progression but it would take much longer to reach equity partnership (if this were possible at all) than at his current firm. The other firm were also possibly more "modern" but he would be a small fish in a big pond and would probably lack influence whereas at the existing firm he could be influential in making changes happen.

How can you weigh up the two offers?

Robin found himself unable to decide what to do. How should he balance a short term gain in money against longer term likelihood of partnership and more money? Did he want to work in a modern firm or influence the transition of a more old-fashioned one?

Check values and limiting beliefs

The answer was to explore Robin's values and which of these were being satisfied by aspects of each situation. By discussing this, Robin worked out for himself that being able to influence the future of the firm was very important to him. He didn't want just to be a cog (albeit a well paid one!)in a big machine. This pushed him towards staying at his present firm.

However, it was also important to check whether Robin was being influenced too strongly by a fear of failure, causing him to go for a "safe" option, or by a concern for other people's feelings.

After taking all these factors into account, Robin felt confident with his final decision to stay.
