What are the confidentiality arrangements for coaching?

Personal/ Life Coaching

In Personal/ life coaching sessions, everything you tell us is kept totally confidential with the following exceptions:

  • If required by law, we may be compelled to breach confidentiality.
  • We believe it is important for all coaches to attend supervisions where they discuss their coaching with colleagues. We do this, and may mention aspects of a client's circumstances without giving away the client's identity. All good coaches will do this, as it is one of the best ways to keep learning and developing.

Executive and Business Coaching

In Executive/ Business Coaching it is important to agree on confidentiality before the sessions start. Some businesses are happy that the sessions are as confidential as personal coaching sessions. Others want to be made aware of goals the coachee is working on, or other aspects of their development.

We always agree the boundaries of confidentiality at the start of a business/ executive coaching assignment.

We are very careful what we agree to disclose to an employer, because confidentiality is one of the most important aspects of the coaching relationship. This means that by demanding too much, an employer can inadvertently hijack the process and thereby not obtain from it the value they want. We would never disclose the subject matter of a coaching session to an employer without the coachee's permission.

We cannot guarantee that email is confidential. Please do not put anything of a highly sensitive nature in an email to us.
